20 Years of Rugs

Rug design specialist and entrepreneur David Ashkenazi has lived and breathed this historic craft for over a decade, working with everything from high-end hand-knotted fashion rugs to artistic avant-garde creations. He collaborates with top designers and architects to create and curate bespoke rugs for diverse projects worldwide.
For David, his passion began with a beautiful old Soumak rug he happened to see in his daily life. Nothing would ever be the same again. After spending years studying economics and working in the restaurant business, David finally found his calling in life. He was amazed by everything he discovered: the fascinating craftsmanship, the breadth of colors and patterns, and the incredible traditional techniques dating back millennia that are still being used today.
David does not believe in a “standard” rug more than a “standard” home, person, or family. Each rug dramatically affects the overall look and ambiance of the entire space, so a rug with the perfect size and style can enhance its other advantages.
This is why he champions bespoke, custom-made rugs that consider all relevant parameters – the materials, coloration, and, most importantly, the people who live there.

    Chinese silk, or pure silk, is a rare, valuable material produced by silkworms. Treasured and traded for millennia, pure silk imbues rugs with unparalleled durability, sheen, and luster. Real Bamboo silk presents similar advantages at a lower price point, but breaks more easily and will lose its sheen over time.
    Know Your Rug- Chinese Silk vs. Bamboo Silk
    Created by highly skilled artisans, hand knotted rugs involve a very time-intensive process involving hundreds of thousands of individual knots. They are produced on a loom, with more intricate designs resulting in a denser rug. Hand tufted rugs, quickly made by technicians using a special tool and adhesive backing, can recreate almost the same designs as hand knotted rugs, but with less finesse and a much shorter lifespan.

    Tibetan or Himalayan wool is locally called changpel – long, thick fleece from Tibetan Highland sheep. Changpel has excellent tensile strength and is especially rich in lanolin, giving it an incredibly soft feel that has led to it being named the most luxurious wool in the world. New Zealand wool comes from merino sheep. Although it contains less lanolin, it is still very soft and durable, and is known for coming in a pure white color.
